Script for Episode #10a
Hey everyone! This one might be a bit emotional for me, so please excuse me for using my notes. I was in my Junior year of undergrad when this happened. I woke up feeling really weird. I honestly thought it was food poisoning, so I continued to get ready for the day. I brushed my teeth, got the shower ready, stepped in, and that's the last thing I remember. I lost around 15 minutes of time. Luckily, I lost consciousness and didn't fall face forward into the shower.
My mother was already on her way to campus, so I guess if it had to happen, it was good timing. My little sister and I really wanted to twin because we had similar brain injuries. Throughout the remainder of my undergrad career, I was seeing a pain specialist to help me get through. I was taking oxycodone just to be able to tolerate the sounds of the classroom, and I always wore sunglasses. I got to know campus police really well because when my head would hurt badly, my vision would get all messed up, and sometimes I forgot where I was. They always took the time to make me feel less embarrassed about my panicked calls, which I appreciated. I even lost my way, fell, and still have the scar on my hand today.
Part of the pain management involved blocking the nerves. That meant having a big needle inserted on both sides of the back of my neck. Then, all over my head, they would inject botox as well. This happened every three months until I graduated in my senior year. When I look back, I'm honestly proud of myself for graduating with honors and becoming a member of Phi Beta Kappa and Lambda Alpha. Graduating with honors required admission to the honors program, maintaining a GPA requirement, and successfully writing and defending an honors thesis. I accomplished all of that despite dealing with a painful brain injury and a learning disability. I hope to show that anyone with a goal who's willing to work can achieve what they want. It won't be easy, but is anything worthwhile truly easy?
In the two years between my undergraduate education and starting my master's with a focus in forensic anthropology, I underwent physical therapy, visual therapy, and regular therapy, all in an effort to get my life back on track. I worked so hard to try and piece my life back together as it was before my brain injury. I won't lie, it was really hard to come to terms with my new limitations on top of my disability. Sights and sounds hurt me to the point of tears, and I was incredibly sensitive to smells. In March 2018, I started streaming because I found that playing video games helped my eyes do the painful work that needed to be done, while still allowing me to have some fun. I streamed with the hope that if someone else had a brain injury or learning disability, they would know they weren't alone.
I think I streamed with my sunglasses on for the first two years, or maybe less. If you check my social media and look for clips from 2018 (switch slides), you'll see. It was really hard to constantly explain to chat why I wore sunglasses every two minutes. This was before I knew about chat bots and timers! Through streaming, I got to meet other people and make the experience of dealing with pain a bit more bearable, as I worked towards getting better.
I never thought my academic journey would involve content creation. I never thought I'd have a career in content creation, and I certainly never thought I would become a founder of a community or organization. A friend from my class told me about the college esports team. I received a scholarship and made the team.
